What Buffer Do You Need to Get Into Boston 2027?

Qualifier registration for the 2027 Boston Marathon closed on September 18. The B.A.A. has announced the 2027 cut-off: 5:17 under your age-group standard. 8,019 qualifiers were not accepted.

How the Boston cut-off works

The B.A.A. caps the field. When more qualifiers apply than there are places, it ranks every applicant by how far under their age-group standard they ran and accepts from the fastest down. The margin of the last runner accepted becomes the cut-off. In the B.A.A.'s words, a qualifying time "does not guarantee entry into the event, but simply the opportunity to submit a registration application." (B.A.A., Qualify)

For 2027, 33,649 qualifiers applied between September 14 and 18. (B.A.A., Sep 29, 2026)

The B.A.A. also added the Boston Qualifier Selection this year, a random draw of approximately 1,000 qualifiers who met their standard but missed the cut-off. (B.A.A., Sep 14, 2026) That gives some bubble runners a second chance, though a random draw is a hard thing to plan a season around.

The last four Boston cut-offs

The cut-off is how far under your qualifying standard you needed to be to get accepted.

Boston Marathon Cut-off (time under standard) Qualifiers not accepted
2024 5:29 11,039
2025 6:51 12,324
2026 4:34 8,887
2027 5:17 8,019

Source: B.A.A., History of Qualifying Times. The field size was 30,000 in each year.

In 2026 the B.A.A. made the standards five minutes faster for every age group under 60, and the cut-off still came in at 4:34. In none of these four years did a runner who ran exactly their standard get in.

The 2027 cut-off came in at 5:17, inside the range of the three before it.

We can’t predict the future, but a buffer of seven minutes or more would have been enough in all four years above making it a relatively useful goal to shoot for. A man aged 40 to 44 has a 3:05 standard. Take seven minutes off and he needs a 2:58, which is a sub-3 whether he planned one or not.

If Boston 2027 didn't work out

It might not be your fitness. You might just need a race that stacks the deck in your favor. The Micro marathons in 2027 might help you out if:

You missed 2027 by a small margin. Some of you ran under your standard and found out this week that it wasn't far enough under. Others finished a minute or two over the standard and couldn't apply at all. Both groups need the same thing next: a certified race inside the 2028 window where you can run a few minutes faster than last time.

You were already aiming at 2028. Then you have a full qualifying window in front of you and no reason to cut it close. Pick a race where the buffer is the goal.

Why March 2027 works for Boston 2028

The 2028 qualifying window opened on September 19, 2026 and closes at registration week in September 2027. The B.A.A. has said the 2028 standards will be the same as the 2027 standards. (B.A.A., Jul 22, 2026)

Breaking 3, our marathon at Rockland Lake State Park in March 2027, gives you a full winter of training from where you are now. If the day goes badly, there is still time for another attempt before the window closes in September.

We will host the inaugural microBQ, our Boston-standards race on the same course, in Fall 2027. That is after the 2028 registration week, but it can be used to pad your buffer for Boston 2028, or as a new qualifier for Boston 2029.

Breaking 3 at Rockland Lake

  • March 27, 2027
  • USATF certified and sanctioned (NY26002JRG)
  • Course time limit: 3:25:00

Set on a flat 3 mile loop, the Breaking 3 marathon offers the following to all participants:

  • Your own bottles are set out on the loop, and you pass them every lap. Dial in your nutrition on race day and be surprised when the wheels are still chugging along just fine at mile 20.

  • The field is capped at 300, so you won't be weaving through anyone at mile one.

  • Pace groups are set for 2:40 to 3:10. We add a group when enough of the field asks for one, so if 25 people want 3:15, a 3:15 pacer shows up.

  • The pacers all have prior experience and meet their own qualifying standards for the group they are set to pace. Nobody banks time in the first half and hands you the bill at mile 18.

  • Tangent line that is re-measured and marked each year to ensure you run exactly 26.2 miles and not a step further.

There is no qualifying time to enter. If you think you will be fit enough for your number, come run it. You can see the lake in the 2026 race photos.

Who Breaking 3 suits

The race is built around a sub-3 finish, and a lot of Boston buffers land close to that number.

  • Men with a standard between 2:55 and 3:15 (ages 18 to 49) who want five to seven minutes of margin.
  • Women who want to move from the bubble to comfortably in. The women's standard for ages 18 to 34 is 3:25:00. A 3:15 finish clears it by ten minutes, and the margin grows with each older age group.

What to do now

  • Register for Breaking 3, a Boston 2028 qualifier.
  • If March is too soon, get on the list for microBQ in fall 2027, which counts toward Boston 2029.
  • If you want a coach to build the block, McKirdy Trained is where you want to go. 48% of their athletes BQ every season.
  • If your goal is sub-2:50 or faster, consider micrOTQ which runs the next morning on the same loop.
